THE CRICKET SEASON

WANGANUI ASSOCIATION MEETING TWO-DAY MATCHES MAY COME AGAIN. Presided over by Mr. J. H. Hayhow, the annual meeting of the Wanganui Cricket Association was held last night. The following club delegates were present : Messrs. F. W. Gilligan and H. E. B. Newton (Collegiate School); W. J. Stephenson and V. A. Stapleton (Ma'ist); F. Smith (Technical Old Boys); G. S. Powell (Technical College), A. N. Lowe and J. Glove? (Wanganui); A. M. Craw ley (A.T.C.). Mr. Hayhc.w moved that a revertion to two-day senior cricket, be made. This was seconded by Mr. H. E. B. Newton. Mr. Hayhow said one-day matches spoilt, cricket and contended that a return to two-day senio;? matches would be all to the good. Mr. Newton said some people confused attractive tactics and slogging. He agreed with Mr. Hayhow that senior cricket in Wanganui would be best served by two-day matches. “There are two distinct sides to this question.” said Mr. F. Smith. He iagreed that cricket is a two-innings game, but one-day matches were introduced as a wartime measure. He moved an amendment, which was seconded by Mr. Stapleton. that the matter bo left to the management committee for a final decision. Mr. Stapleton, in speaking to the amendment, stressed the difficulty in clubs fielding the same teams for two consecutive Saturdays. If times were normal, two-day cricket matches would be all right, but times were not normal, he said. Mr. Hayhow withdrew his motion and the amendment was carried. ELECTION OF OFFICERS. MARIST CLUB MEETING The annual meeting of the Marist Cricket Club held recently, was well attended. The annual report reviewed □ successful past season in which the club had gained the senior championship fo»’ the tirsc time. The report congratulated the Collegiate School ir. winning the junior championship and paid tribute to the co-operation received from the different clubs in the various competitions. Acknowledgment is made of the individual performances in batting and bowling. In batting A. Crafar scored 106 not out, and his brother S. Crafar 104, no: out. In bowling “hat tricks" were secured by G. A. McDougall, J. Timbs and N. Wallace, J. Felts had the following average: 150 overs, 33 maiden?, 408 runs, 37 wickets, an average ol 11.92. The report adds that a contributing factor to the successful running of the cub is the co-operation received by officers from all club members.
