LOCAL BODY ELECTIONS
EFFECT 1 ON CHA!RMEN OF CHANGE IN ACT A peculiair position has arisen in regard to thje election of chairmen of certain local bodies, notably electric power boards. The position is likely to be disewssed at the monthly meeting of the Wanganui-Rangitikei Electric Poweg Board on Thursday, May 11. The Act governing these boards provides that, the election of chairmen shall take place in the month of May. Because,, however, of the postponement of the local body elections this year until 'iMay 27, it will not be possible for tihe newly-elected boards to meet till Jiune. As the Act is mandatory, the retiring boards win have to elect the chairmen for the“ ensuing year, in ispite of the fact that these members jnay not be returned at the poll. It a»;o precludes newly-elected boards froui electing their own chairmen shoulp the ones elected by the retiring b«ards be duly returned. At the Tfutt Valley Board on Thursday a member remarked that this was the inevitable result of hasty legislation.
