Mr. V. G. Grunlinton, postmaster at Waihi, succeeds Mr. G. R. O. Mulholland as postmaster at Pukekohe. Mr. Mulholland is to be chief postmaster at Thames.

Brigadier Hargest addressed a private meeting of the Royal Empire Society in London on Thursday, describing his adventures while escaping from Italy and Switzerland. Sir Alexander Godley presided. Mr. Nash was also present. Mr. H. (“Bert”) Fry, Wanganui, is an inmate of the Wanganui Public Hospital. After winning the 100 yards handicap committeemen’s race at the Savage Club’s up-river picnic last Sunday, he stumbled and fell heavily, rupturing a thigh muscle, Mr. A. G. McFarland, acting-editor of the Wanganui Herald, who died on Thursday, was referred to at the monthly meeting of the Wanganui County Council yesterday. The chair.man, Cr. A. H. Collins, said that for many years Mr. McFarland had been associated with the council on the Press desk. “I am sure we shall all miss his genuine kindly ways,” the chairman added. “It was with verymuch regret that we heard of his passing.” Tributes to Mr. McFarland were also paid by Cr. {W. Craig. A motion of sympathy with the relatives was carried.

Field-Secretary J. H. Beaven, who returned with the second furlough party from the Middle East on Thursday, is a son of Mr. F. G. Beaven, Castlecliff, and has been absent from New Zealand since August, 1940. Previously employed by the Wanganui Engineering Works, Field-Secretary Beaven joined the Y.M.C.A. on the outbreak of war in the hope of going overseas. He was in the campaigns in Greece and Crete and had a fortunate escape from capture by the Germans. He later served with the Y.M.C.A. in the Middle East, having charge of work for the troops in the desert. He was wounded on the way to Tripoli.
