BUTCHERS AT BELFAST
DISPUTE OVER UNSKILLED LABOUR (P.A.) Christchurch, Jan. 4. Butchers at the Belfast freezing works of Thomas Borthwick and Sons, Ltd., refused to man the two killing chains when the works reopened this morning after holidays. It is understood that the men objected to the company placing unskilled workers on the chains to replace men who had failed to report at work after being directed by the district manpower officer. The dispute was settled early in the afternoon after a conference between representatives of the National Service Department, the Lal;,our Department, the company and the Freezing workers’ Union. Killing was resumed at 1.45 p.m. When the reported stoppage was referred to the secretary of the union, Mr. 11. G. Kilpatrick, he said that the trouble arose in regard to the staffing of chains and the position was greatly aggravated by skilled slaughtermen who had been directed to employment at the works by the district manpower officer failing to report. Mr. Kilpatrick added that it was ridiculous to say that a strike in the accepted sense of the word had been called.
