POLICE FORCE ACT
ARE REGULATIONS VALID? (P.A.) Wellington, Nov. 17. Questioned whether there was power under the Police Force Act for the regulations governing the sparetime employment of policemen and for the control of wives engaged in essential industry, Mr. J. Meltzer, general secretary ot the New Zealand Police Association, said it was a macM ter being considered by the associa-', tion. If the regulation was valid the country would be deprived of the valuable services o( these men at a time when they were desperately needed. It is argued, he said, that it would be reasonable for police officers when off duty or on leave to have freedom from official restraint and be permitted to live their lives as they wish, subject only to the possibility of being called back to duty at any time in case of emergency. With regard to the wives of policemen, he said the public should be concerned to see the conflict between manpower and the Commisisoner of Police clarified, as well as the general question of a police officer being entitled to do as he chooses in his own private time.
