BOOKMAKER FINED £l00

(P.A.) Palmerston N., Nov. 15. Lionel Andrew Johnston, tailor, was fined £lOO with costs in the Magistrate’s Court, Palmerston North, today, by Mr. H. P. Lawry, S.M., on a charge of bookmaking. Senior-De-tective Meiklejohn stated that at 2.25 p.m. on Saturday he paid a visit to the office of defendant*. Three bets were taken after his arrival. Betting slips showed a total oE £llO 10s, and defendant 'had £lO3 10s in his pockets. Mr. Rowe said that defendant had been forced out. of his tailoring business by war restrictions and loss of staff.

The magistrate commented that the fine would have to be stepped up.
