JILTED BY FIANCEE
SOLDIER ATTACKED GIRLS. Sydney, Oct. 25. Jilted by his fiancee while he was away at the war, a discharged soldier became a mad woman-hater and nearly murdered two other girls. This, Melbourne police say, is the story behind the attack at Albert Park, on July 16, on Margaret Mann (21) and Betty Anderson (16). Both have now fully recovered. They were battered with an axe at 3 a.m. in a backyard bungalow at their boardinghouse, and their skulls were fractured. Some days after the attack a discharged soldier was questioned and then sent to a mental institution.
The soldier, who was living close to the house where the girls boarded, was in a violent mood on the night of the attack, detectives learned, smashing furniture and abusing his landlady. About midnight he was seen to rush up to a tram and abuse the conductress. Miss Mann is a conductress.
Before he went overseas, the soldier was engaged to a girl who occupied a backyard bungalow in the same locality, and. while he was away the girl married-
