NEW U.S. BATTLESHIP
SOUTH DAKOTA’S SECRETS REVEALED Reed. 8 p.m. Washington. Oct. 2. The Navy Department identified the battleship which shot down 32 Japanese planes off Santa Cruz Island on October 16, 1942, and sank three cruisers off Savo Island on November 14, 1942, as the South Dakota, com- 'lta ir.anded by Rear-Admiral Thomas Y Gatch. The Navy Deparlment explained that identity was not previously disclosed because she was the first ot the new class battleships bearing new armament and greatly increased firepower. The department added that if the Japanese had known she was the South Dakota it would have given them valuable information of the new class.
It. was revealed that the South Dakota's sister-ships are Massachusetts, Indiana and Alabama.
