ARMS WORKERS’ STRIKE
MINISTER’S FIRM STAND Rpcd. 6 p.m. London. Oct. 1. The Minister of Labour, Mr. Bevin. to-dav issued a statement concerning a strike by arms workers In Barrow-in-Furness. Mr. Bevin said that the Government was determined to support constitutional methods of settling industrial questions, and that the success of these methods depended on the trade unions maintaining their authority. The strikers’ contention is that under certain war conditions some unskilled or half-skilled workers receive more than expert craftsmen. Mr. Bevin said that the dispute was now settled and the decision of the tribunal was final and binding. The workers who were striking were overruling their trade union. They were therefore slowing up the war effort and endangering the lives of British fighting men. The only honourable course for them to follow was to accept the decision of the tribunal and return to work.
