AKAROA PIONEER
DEATH OF MR. E. X. LE LIEVRE (P A.) Christchurch, Oct. 3. Etienne Xavier Le Lievre, of Akaroa, who has had a long association with Banks Peninsula, has died. Born in Akaroa on June 23, 1854, he was a son of the late Mr. E. F. Le Lievre, of Normandy, France, who came first to New Zealand with the French whaler, Langlois in 1838, when Langlois bought Banks Peninsula from the Maoris. Mr. E. F. Le Lievre was a member of the crew of the Comte De Paris, which brought settlers to Akaroa in August, 1840, but returned to France with the ship and came out finally to settle in Akaroa in 1842. Mr. E. X. Le Lievre was educated at Pigeon Bay private school and at the Akaroa School. He gained farming experience with his father and took over the Paua Bay property, specialising in sheep and cattle and dairying. His interest in trotting took him to the United States on several occasions, and he nad imported manv trotters to New Zealand. He bred and raced Peter Bingen, winner of the New Zealand Cup, and he won the Wellington Cup, the first gold cup in New Zealand, with Great Audubon.
Mr. Le Lievre was a former Mayor of Akaroa, and a former chairman of the Akaroa County Council.
