NO-CONFIDENCE VOTE

MR. BARCLAY AT ELTHAM (Special.) Hawera, Sept. 2. “While thanking the Hon. J. G. Barclay for his address, this representative meeting of Egmont affirms that it has no confidence in him as (1) Minister of marketing, (2) Minister of Lands, (3) Minister of Agriculture, and also affirms that it has no confidence in the Labour Government.” Moved as an amendment by Mr. H. C. Wills to a motion of thanks proposed by Mr. G. W. Peebles, the foregoing was carried by more than a 10 to one majority on a show of hands among 500 to 600 voters addressed by the Minister in the Eltham Town Hall last night. It was greeted with a burst of apnlause, mingled with some dissentient voices and catcalls. The proposer was supported by Mr. J. J. Landers as seconder. On the voices the audience appeared to be fairly evenly divided, but on a show of hands there was overwhelming support. On th' - ' call of Mr. A. J. Hansen for cheers for “Mr. Corbett, the National candidate, and the National Party,” there was an enthusiastic response. With the meetin~ predominantly opposed to his party, Mr. Barclay nevertheless was given a good hand when he rose to reply. “I want to thank you for a good meeting,” he said. “Many of you have come a long way and I want to say to you now. let th A fight be a clean fight until September 25. and after the decision on that date let us be good friends so that we can go forward, winning the war together. I don’t mind you having your different opinion. but do let us have a clean fight./' On his motion a very cordial vote of thanks was accorded the Mayor. Mr. C. A. Wilkinson. M.P., who presided, an earlier tribute having been paid by the Minfater to Mr. Wilkinson’s long political career, from which he retired with the respect of all the parties in the House.
