RATA PATRIOTIC MEETING

SUCCESSFUL St’OBTS AND DANCi) The sports meeting organised by the Rata Patriotic Society was a great success. The day was perfect and people took advantage of a good day’s outing and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. There were a good number of horses from far and near and some very >*>od jumping was witnessed. Tne committee wish to thank all good sports who so generously gave donations and trophies. Their special thanks are due to Mr. Lindsay Bull and his willing band of helpers for running the horse events, also to Mr. S. C Mcßae, who judged the same. The ladies also put in some hard work with stalls, etc.

The dance in the Scots Hall, Hunterville, in the evening, was also very successful. The music was supplied by Mrs. Werata and party and extras were played by Miss J. McNab, Mr. P. McNab and Mr. P. Horn. The proceeds of the day will be over £2OO, which must be very gratifying to the committee who worked hard to get the sports going in a short time. Women’s Institute during the past year, and all were well attended. Eleven committee meetings were also held. This was disclosed in the annual report, which stated “the year has been an interesting and happy one one for members.’’ The membership was 60 financial members. During the year members had helped a family whose house had been burnt down. At the federation meeting the branch’s three-minute report, which was read by the president, Mrs. Uttiey, was given third place. Entries in the flower show were of a high standard. A Welfare League was set up during the year. A great deal of patriotic knitting was done. Programmes were kept bright, and each month demonstrations and talks were given. A parcel to a Castlecliff soldier serving overseas is sent every month, and many letters of appreciation have been received. Money boxes were given to all Institute babies.

PATEA WOMEN’S INSTITUTE The following additional officials of the Patea Women’s Institute have been appointed for the current year: Vice-presidents, Miss Locker, Mesdames R. E. Moore and J. W. Haarer; secretary, Mrs. S. Gunn; treasurer, Mrs. G. Mercer; stewards, Hall, Mesdames C. Hill and O. Meuli; trading stall Mesdames P. Bourke, F. Kelly and J. Bates;- afternoon tea, Mrs. It. Green; “Home and Country,” Mrs. G Mercer; spinning, Mrs. A. Taylor; competitions, Mrs. F. King; Press, Miss Locker; Golden Thread, Mrs. J. Haarer. It was decided to have a buffet tea at each monthly meeting and to continue the Golden Thread talks. The institute decided to continue to be responsible for Patea’s quota of patriotic unaddressed parcels and to hold a shop day before the time of each quota in order to rail the nccesrrry funds to purchase material and ingredients for the parcels. Offers from members to make shortbread and biscuits were accepted with thanks. An appeal is to be made to residents for tins for cakes and biscuits for the parcels. Ir. was also decided to continue the drive for waste paper. At the annual meeting of the Carlyle Women’s Institute Mrs. Tidswell (Federation president) occupied the chair. Mrs. Butters was re-elected president with the following committee: Mesdames Edwards, Oakley. Cooper, Smith, and Peacocke. Points prizes for the year were won by Mrs. Cooper 1. Mrs. Moore and Mrs. Peacock o (equal) 2; be& bloom. Mr Peacocke 1. Monthly competitions: Bost decorated lettuce salad in soup plate, Mrs. Peacocke 1. Mrs. Cooper and Mrs. Smith (equal) 2; hloom, Mrs. Oakley 1. Mrs. Peacocke 2 Mrs. Marshall 3. Prize for potato glowing (four roots), Mrs. Feacocke 1 (101 b. loz.). Hostesses were Mesdames Cooper, Fairweather and Edwards.
