SOCIAL AND PERSONAL Mrs. F. Webb Jones. Gonville. has returned from a visit to Christchurch and Wellington. Mrs. A. Pritchard, Guyton Street, has returned from a holiday spent in Rotorua. Mrs. D. G. Strachan. Liffiton Street, left yesterday for a short holiday in Inglewood. Miss L. M. Crosbie, matron of the Raetihi Hospital, has been appointed matron at tne Thames Hospital. She took up her present position in August, 1940. Mrs. Sherwin, of Christchurch, and formerly of Wanganui, is the guest of Mrs. L. W. Chisholm, Gonville. Mrs. Carveil, Harrison Street, has returned to Wanganui after spending a fortnight’s holiday in Auckland. Mrs. Chris. Bell, Springvale, and her daughter, Mrs. W. E. Greenslade, Waikato, have left for the South Island. Sister J. R. McGregor, of the Wanganui Hospital staff, nas been granted leave of absence for duty with the New Zealand Army Nursing Service. Appreciation of her work was expressed by the chairman, Mr. W. E. Broderick (Maxwell) at the board’s monthly meeting yesterday.

HITHER AND THITHER. Girls’ College Parents’ Association. The Wanganui Girls’ College Parents’ Association held the annual general meeting on Wednesday evening at the College, when the principal, Miss M. A. Baker, gave a very interesting address, setting out the many and varied openings offered girls today through the University Entrance Examination and Bursaries. She also stressed the urgent need for a revision of status of the domestic trades that require an eucation equal to those ol many professions. The chairman, Mr. Andrews, thanked Miss Baker for her address and for her interest in the association through the past year. The election of officers for the coming year, was as follows: Mr. Andrew?., president; Mr. A. Weekes, vice-presi-dent; Mr. Whitehead, secretary and treasurer; and committee, Mesdames O’Toole, Coupland) Abernethy and Yates. Open discussion and supper terminated this very pleasant meeting. Wanganui W.D.F.U. The monthly meeting of the local branch of the Women’s Division of the N.Z. Farmers’ Union was held in the Y.M.C.A. Lounge on Wednesday, Mrs. A. McPhail presiding over a good attendance of members. Before com mencing the agenda, the president made feeling and appreciative reference to the qualities of the late Mrs. J. A. Hair, who, for many years, had been an enthusiastic member ot the committee, and to whom the community owed so much for quiet and unassuming services in many fields of welfare work. All stood in silence as a tribute to her memory. Collectors were thanked for their part in the recent effort to assist the funds of Air Force Relations, and correspondence was received from headquarters asking for the support of all branches on behalf of the Division’s Rest Home, in Palmerston North, which is doing such a splendid service to the community, by affording a restful holiday to all women who, owing to lack oi help in their homes, are finding it increasingly difficult to shoulder growing responsibilities. Instead of holding a garden party to raise funds for patriotic and “division” work, it was decided to run a shop day in town next week, all mem nets and friends oeing urged to contribute towards the stalls for flowers, cakes, produce, clothing and oddments. As a membei of the regional committee, Mrs. McPhail explained the aims and objects of the Army Education and Welfare Services, and asked all present to give the organisation their fullest sympathy and support as soon as it begins io function. The tea hostesses, Misses Morgan and Sampson, with their helpers provided a very welcome cup of. [ tea and the meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the cnair.

Wangaehu W.D.F.U. The Wangaehu branch of W.D.F.U. held the first meeting of tne year recently. Correspondence dealt with included a letter of thanks from the Rev. Thompson Dominion secretary oi the Interdenominational Mission to Lepers, for the donation of £2 6s 3d forwarded by members of W.D. at Christmas. The branch again uecideu to assist the Returned Services Association in the sale of poppies for their Poppy Day appeal. Tne sum ot £□ was voted as an annual contribution to the Community Chest. Afternoon tea, followed by a competition, was enjoyed by all. The next meeting of the branch will be held on March 25, and Mrs. Neilson and Miss' J. bignell are to be hostesses.

WESTBOURNE W.L The annual meeting of the Westbourne Women’s Institute was held in St. Luke's Hall, when there was an excellent attendance oi members. Two visitors, Mrs. Hart and Mrs. Gray, were welcomed. Mrs. F. 11. Uttiey, president, presided. The motto was “an up-to-the-minute effort is oetter than a last-minute regret,” and was read by the retiring secretary, Mrs. E. Allan. Members were reminded about the pine needle demonstration next month, also the gardening circle to meet at the residence of Mr. Hope Gibbons on March 26. Members decided to form an arts and crafts circle. Mrs. McCarthy and Mrs. Allan were the two appointed delegates for the Dominion Council half-yearly meeting. Mrs. O. E. Hallam, a member of the W.W.S.A., gave an outline of the work, and appealed for the service of a typist. Mrs. Gaston volunteered for the work. Mrs. Hodge sang two songs, with Miss Sawyers as accompanist. Mrs. H. Marumaru gave a demonstration on making flax aaskets.

A letter of appreciation was read from Private Jackson, who had received an institute parcel. The parcel this month will be sent to Private E. S. Pidwell.

The secretary’s annual report, read oy Mrs. Allan, was well received. The financial statement was givlen by the treasurer, Mrs. C. Simmons, .a sound posiiton being disclosed. Mrs. Simmons was congratulated on her year’s work. Mr. D. R. Robbins, who audited the books, was thanked by the president, and was re-elected auditor .or next year.

Mrs. F. 11. Uttiey was k manimousl> re-elected president. The committee is as follows: Mesdames C. Simmons, J. Gaston, K. Prouse, E. Howe, W. Stewart, C. Vincent, E. Graham, E. Butler, and 11. Owles. The ‘ outgoing committee was thanked lor the years work, and memb<<_x were presented

with sprays. The artists received Howers, as also did Mrs. Hickman, knitting convener, who retired, and the newly-elected convener. Mrs. Woodley, Mesdames E. Stewart, G. Bergen, and Woodley were thanked (or arranging the floral tributes. Tea was served and the singing of the National Anthem closed an enjoyable meeting.

Patriotic knitting done during thr month and handed in were three pullovers, two balaclavas, 12 pairs mittens, and one scarf.
