ROYAL NAVY’S WORK
TRIBUTE BY GENERAL SMUTS ■London. March 15. Field-Marshal Smuts paid a tribute to-day to the work of the Royal Navy. He said it was only a question of time before the war of the oceans would be won, and then the way would be open to final and complete victory in all theatres of war. Without the sure shield of the Royal Navy. South Africa's position in the global war would have been one of great peril.
Even now, while the war was receding further from their shores, the U-boat menace remained, and lhe functions of the Navy were as important and as necessary as ever. It was the Navy that had kept the sealanes of the world open to a large extent, and it was the Navy that was fighting the U-boat menace. Recent results on I*3 Seven Seas were the most encouraging since the war began. Fewer Allied merchant, ships were being sunk and more Übots were being destroyed, but the menace still remained, and . he gave a warning against careless talk.
