WANGANUI FRUIT MARTS VEGETABLES AT LOW PRICES Apples were in short supply in Wanganui early in the week, but about 1200 cases of Cox’s Orange Pippins reached the fruit marts yesterday and met a keen inquiry. Supplies of both dessert and cookers should increase next week. Pears were also in short supply during the week. -A small shipment arrived yesterday and were sold out within an hour. Oranges and bananas are off the wholesale market. . Peaches have been coming to hand more freely and in consequence the market has eased. Plums, apricots and greengages are finished for the season. The tomato market was firm Qarly in the week. Supplies increased later on. and this factor, combined with colder weather, affected the demand and prices eased. Good supplies of passion fruit have been received in Wanganui and prices have dropped. Vegetables have been in good supply, with low prices ruling. Smaller supplies of green peas and French beans have been arriving, and the market is firmer for quality lines. Pumpkins are plentiful. Cucumbers are in over-supply and cabbages are offering at low rates. Wholesale prices are as follow: Apples: Cox’s Orange Pippins, 6s 6d to 9s 6d a case; other desserts quoted but none on market; cookers, Ballarats, 7s 6d to 8s 6d. Pears: Dessert and cooking, all varieties, 12s 6d a case. Lemons: New Zealand, 18s to 21s a case, according 'to count. Peaches: 8s to 11s a case. Oranges: Unobtainable. Tomatoes: Slipped considerably, as low as Is 6d to Is 9d a case; best grades, up to 3s 3d. Passion Fruit: 9s to 19s a ‘case of nine dozen. Cabbage: 4s to 7s sack. Cauliflower: None offering. Lettuce: Choice, 8s to 10s a case; inferior, 4s to ss. Pumpkins: 6s to 8s sack. Carrots: 5s to 6s sugar bag. Parsnips: 5s to 6s sugar bag. Swedes: 2s to 3s sugar bag. Spinach: Made up to 4s dozen bunches. Marrows: Is 6d to 3s per dozen. Cucumbers: Is 6d to 2s dozen. Green Peas: 6d a lb. Beans: French, 3d to 5d a lb. Onions: 18s a cwt. Potatoes: 5s to 6s sugar bag.
