YOUTH SENTENCED

REFORMATIVE DETENTION (P.A.) Dunedin, March 12. "The prisoner is the very class of person who should be sent there,” said Mr. Justice Kennedy this morning in rejecting a suggestion by counsel that a lad of nearly 18 who appeared for sentence for breaking, entering and theft should not be sent to the Borstal on the ground that he might come out worse than when he entered. His Honour added that such institutions in this country happily had a very high percentage of successes.

Counsel said the lad's trouble was that at an early age he was earning too much money, sometimes up to £□ a week. Prisoner was sentenced to two years’ reformative detention
