WINDFALL APPLES
MAY BE MARKETED IN CHRISTCHURCH. (P.A.) Christchurch, March 11. Following severe storms in Christchurch on Wednesday and over the week-end, which caused some damage to orchards, the windfall grade of apple will be accepted locally this season, stated Mr. A. R. Grainger, Government orchard inspector. This applies with the following conditions: (1) That the apples are in all other respects extra fancy, fancy, or commercial grade, and that those which have fallen to the ground owing to mouldy core, insect injury, etc., are excluded; (2) that the quality and condition of the fruit are suitable ‘for dessert and for culinary purposes; (3) that the apples are free from excessive bruising and abrasions which, in the opinion of an inspector, having regard to the variety of the apple, are likely to develop serious decay rapidly.
