MANY GAINS IN CHINA (Recd. 6 p.m.) Chungking, Feb. 28. A Chinese communique says that Japanese troops in the vicinity of Mitgkwan, in Yunnan, continued . to advance northward in the direction of Tachupa against bitter opposition. A Japanese unit over 1000 strong advanced on February 24 eastward from Kunlung and attacked Mengthing. The Japanese recaptured Suiki, in southern Kwangtung, on February 22, and also two other towns. The Japanese captured Fengkow, in central Hupeh, on February 25 after bitter hand-to-hand fighting in which there were heavy casualties on both sides. A Japanese force 10,000 strong advanced from Chiangyu and other bases against the Chinese in a southern Shantung position. There were heavy casualties on both sides in several days of fighting.
