MAORIS IMPRISONED

CHARGES OF DISHONESTY (P.A.) Auckland, Feb. 18. Two young Maoris were sentenced by Mr. Justice Callan to-day for dishonesty. James Barker, aged 18, who was in military uniform, offered no excuse for breaking and entering a Kaikohe shop and stealing goods. "Like many young men, white and brown, he is growing up with no respect for the property of others, and no understanding of the virtue of honesty,” said the Judge in committing Baker to Borstal for two years. Mackie Raniera, aged 22, who walked on sticks, was found guilty on five charges of forging and uttering social security payment warrants. The Judge said that Raniera increased the amounts on the pay warrants on five occasions. He was sentenced to one year’s reformative detention.
