FRENCH SOMALILAND
RETURN OF CONFISCATED RADIOS London, Jan. 3. One of the first acts of the new Governor of French Somaliland, M. Andre Bayardelle, was to return to the population the radios which the Vichy authorities has confiscated. The British United Press Jibuti correspondent reports that M. Bayai delle has released those taken into custody for Fighting French sympathies and has arrested 33 members of the Italian Armistice Commission.
The British Commander in East Africa, Lieut.-General Sir William Platt, the Fighting French National Commissioner for War. General ;e Gentilhomme, and M. Bayardelle, attended a troop parade in Jibuti celebrating the colony’s freedom. General le Gentilhomme, addressing the population, declared: “You have been in the dark about what was going on. Now you are free to have your own opinions. No pressure will be applied. Ybu can read any foreign newspaper you like and listen to any radio station you please.”
