TAKING TOLL OF JAP SHIPPING (Recd. 7 p.m.) Washington, Jan. 2. | A Navy Department communique states that American submarines operating in the Pacific and the Far East sank two large cargo ships, a medium--1 sized passenger and cargo ship, a medium-sizd cargo ship, a mediumsized transport, a medium-sized tanker, and a small cargo ship, and damaged one destroyer. These sinkings have not been announced in previous communiques.

The Associated Press says the tolal of Japanese ships sunk by American submarines since December 7, 1941, is now 112.
