FULL CONFIDENCE IN VICTORY
STOCK MARKETS’ REVIEW ‘ (Reed. 7.5 p.m.) London. Jan. 1. Stock markets which a year ago were bidding farewell to one of the ' most critical years in British history, now close on a note of complete confidence in ultimate Allied victory. The past year, despite reverses in the opening months, has been favourable for investors. The Bankers’ i Magazine annual review shows an increase of £194,500,000, or 3 per cent., in the aggregate market value of 365 • representative securities. This ap* ■ preciation, however, greatly under- ! states the improvement in speculative securities, because the British Govern- • ment, Dominion and other gilt-edged • securities were included in the list. | They have scarcely changed, and in • some cases have slightly declined. 1 Home industrials, home railways and foreign government and foreign rails i all show substantial gains. The most • spectacular fluctuations occurred in oil, tin and rubber, all of which show some improvement on the year. Oils ; have actually risen nearly one-third.
