NEW YEAR HOLIDAY RACING

HIGH CLASS WINS GOOD DIVIDEND IN CUP AT MARTON SPRINT TO KOL RAGI RECORD CROWD ATTENDS A crowd which was of record dimensions for the Marton Jockey Club patronised the opening day of the summer meeting yesterday, and one of the results was tjie sale of all race-books ten minutes before the start of the first race. Late-comers went without. Naturally, the totalisator turnover soared to “boom” heights, the machine putting through £48,147 10s, compared with £23,418 10s on New Year’s Day twelve months ago, an increase of £24,729. This was in spite of the shutting out of hundreds of pounds on each race, and the programme got behind schedule, the last race being run nearly naif an hour late. The weather was fine and sultry, the heat being oppressive. The track was hard and very fast. Backers of favourites did not have a very profitable day, as Po-Huka, winner of the second division of the Maiden Race, was the only each-wa> favourite to win. though both Lady Nahleen and Koi Ragi were “win” favourites to score. Several handsome dividends were hoisted during the day.

The Marton Cup went to Mr. T. A. Duncan’s Bulandshar gelding High Class, who was, surprisingly enough, only seventh in request on the machine and paid a good doublefigure price. Always well placed, High Class came away at the finish, but he had to do his best to hold off a challenge from Alethea, who got an indifferent run half a mile from home and then went under by only half a head. Two Wanganui horses in Amigo and Dynasty were nearest at the finish, 'ahead of Gay Genet and Caroline Bay, the latter apparently being the elect of the L. G. Morris stable. The favourite, Yogi, was not seen at his best.

Koi Ragi showed his consistency over the holiday meetings by winning the McManaway Memorial after leading all the way, though he had to respond to a sustained challenge by Daljarrock. Pay Roll was a good ».hird, ahead of The Champ and Indian Sign, but the well-backed Black Robe was a disappointment. Radio Call gave nothing else a chance in the first division of the Maiden Race, with the Wanganuiowned Sir Bent returning a nice price for second place. The second division was won by Po-Huka, whose backers were never uneasy, and the Nightly "elding had three lengths to spare from Solver. In this race Lucky Comet was pulled up at the three fur'ongs with a broken back and had to be destroyed.

The Trentham-trained Lady Nah'een proved the “good thing” . the betting in the Juvenile Handicap, eading most of the way to win handomely. Note Raid was a good second, with the Wanganui-trained Etian'hus returning a good price for third place. Gunyah returned over a score when he won the Aidworth Stakes, and in a nreat tussle for the minof placings Pompit just beat Lady Spiral and First Edition.

Vitement came home in the Rata Hack Hurdles at double figures, beating the well-backed Glaciate, with Dark Eagle third. Trained at Hastings. Glenfalloch scored handsomely in the nine-furlong New Year Hack Handicap from an outsider in Condole, with the favourite. Centennial, third.

Noble Eagle, who had scored previously on the Marton track, was « decisive winner in the concluding event, running home two lengths ahead of Royal Counsellor and the well-backed Nighean, with Sea Quex fourth.
