A SOLDIER’S HATE
Sydney, Oct. 30. Arthur Henry Whyte, a returned soldier, hates Italians because his mate was shot in the back in the Middle j East by an Italian he was helping. I That was his excuse in the Adelaide I Police Court for having assaulted an Italian in a city watch-house cell. I Whyte was charged with having I used indecent, language. The police Lsau’ he had compelled a tram to stop by standing on the line, and had then sworn at the driver. He was locke.l up with some Italians who had been detained for having refused to work on an Allied Works Council job. The accused said he had been discharged from the Army the previous day, and had met five other soldiers with whom he had been abroad. “Two of these soldiers saved my life at Crete," ho said. "They carried me to a boat after I had been left for dead. Wp had a few drinks, and I don't, know what happened afterwards. I have bitter memories of.the Italians. My service in the Middle East has taught mo to hate them all.” Whyte was sentenced to a week’s goal for the assualt on the Italian and was fined £1 on the indecent language charge.
