LYTTELTON FIRE
PROBLEM OF PETROL SUPPLIES CONSUMPTION BY ENGINES (P.A.) Christchurch, Dec. 28. A problem which arose out o£ the long hours of pumping by the Lyttelton Fire Brigade’s main engine and the 15 trailer pumps used at the big tire at Lyttelton on Christmas Eve was the petrol supply for the engines. The main engine pumped continuously for 12 hours, her engine running at a speed equivalent to that needed to drive a vehicle 40 m.p.h ' This problem was solved by Mr. G. Zanders, who is in charge oi Sinclair Melbourne and Co., Ltd.'s petro! bowser. He filled tins with petrol, all of which had to be pumped bv hand as the electric power was off. anil took the tins in his car to the various engines. The attraction of the Lyttelton tire ruins tor sightseers and the ordinary holidays traffic have given the railway officials of the port line a busy time. Over the last three davs passengers to Lyttelton have aver aged over 5000 daily.
