CHRISTMAS GREETINGS

MAYOR, COUNCILLORS AND STAFF Christmas greetings were exchanged between the Mayor, Hon. W. J. Rogers, councillors, and the staff, at a special meeting last night of the Wanganui City Council. Wishing councillors, their wives and the staff the compliments of the season. Mr. Rogers said the year drawing to a close had been a very eventful one in New Zealand and for the world in general. “We should keep in our hearts all those things associated with Christmas,” Mr. Rogers added. “1 extend to you and your wives and relatives all the best that. Christmas can bring in spite of anxious times, and wish you a better 1943 than 1942.” Cr. T. S. Russell said they all appreciated the kindly remarks, and on behalf of the council reciprocated the Mayor's greetings. A pleasant and informal Christmas supper followed the special meeting. Cr. E. W. Merewether acted as toastmaster, supported by Cr. Russell, proposed the principal toast. A friendly spirit prevailed at the gathering and the speeches were mainly in humorous vein. Also present were the city solicitor, Mr. C. F. Treadwell, and executive officers of the council. A bouquet was presented to Miss M. E. Murch, of the town clerk’s office. Cr. T. S. Russell proposed the toast of the City Council, replied to by the chairmen of various committees as follows: The Mayor (Finance), Cr. S. J. Harris (Tramways), Cr. G. E. Bennett (Gas), Cr. G. P. Hawkins (Works), and Cr. W. Searle (Reserves). Other toasts were: The Staff. Cr. T. N. Dickson; reply. Mr. C. R. White (Administrative). Mr. W. J. Frethey (Engineers). Mr. W. Stone (Gas Engineers). Mr. C. F. Treadwell (City Solicitor). The Press. Cr. A W. Scoullar; reply, representatives of the Press.
