MAIZE GROWING
GISBORNE AREA CROP CHANGE TO OTHER CROPS Gisborne, Sept. 26. A change is taking place in the cropping plan of the Gisborne district and maize production appears likely to give way to other crops which require less labour in harvesting. Giving evidence in a case at a sitting of the No. 2 Armed Forces Appeal Board, Mr. G. W. Armstrong, chairman of the Gisborne Seed and Produce Merchants’ Association, said the normal consumption of maize in New Zealand was about 120,000 sacks, out on present observations it appeared tnat during the coming season the Dominion output might be reduced to 75,000 sacks. A greater production of maize than that would oe required, particularly now that a decision had been reached to manufacture starch from maize in the Dominion. Mr. Armstrong said Gisborne growers were turning to other crops Because of great difficulty in securing labour for the harvesting of maize. There was a reduction in the area planted in tnis crop in the district last season from the record acreage of tne previous season and it appeared that during the coming spring there would be a further decline in plantings.
