MARTON NOTES

BRITISH BIBLE SOCIETY. The secretary of the Marton branch of the British and Foreign Bible Society reports a most successful year’s work. The amount of £5O was dispatched this month to the society’s headquarters at Bible House, Wellington. MARTON GIRLS KNIT FOR NAVI LEAGUE. Miss J. Wilkinson, infant mistress at the Marton Junction School, has recently received a letter from Mrs. Arkwright, the local secretary of the Navy League, in which she expresses warm appreciation of the knitting done by the senior girls of the school for the sailors. Mrs. Arkwright made special mention of the excellence of the work done. FIRE BRIGADE EUCHRE TOURNEY The Marton Fire Brigade’s euchre tourney, held on Saturday night, was very successful, 44 players taking part. The winners were:—Ladies: Miss E. Montgomery 1, Mrs. A. Hounsell 2. Men: Messrs. A. Govenlock 1 and Mildenhall 2. NAVY LEAGUE DANCE AT TUTAENUI The dance organised by Misses J. and D. Wood and Misses C. Pidwell and E. A. Gibbs at the Tutaenui Hall on Saturday night was a great success, £l5 6s being collected towards the Navy League’s funds. Dancing and euchre were indulged in. The euchre winners were Miss C. Stafford and Mr. K. Wilson. The cigarettes donated by Mr. J. D. Smith were won by Mr. J. D. Wood and the chocolates donated by Mr. E. Gibbs were won by Mr. C. Turner. A dance in aid of the Navy League “shop,” which is being controlled by Mrs. A. Duckworth for the Tutaenui district, takes place on October 20. CIVIC THEATRE, MARTON, In "Tarzan’s Secret Treasure," at the Civic Theatre to-night, Johnny Weissmuller, as Tarzan, has lost none of his instinct and athletic prowess in his latest contact with men of the outside world. In his newest adventure he comes into conflict with a safari of explorers in search of gold. Although he narrowly misses death at the hands of one of their members, and although Jane (Miss O’Sullivan) and their adopted son, “Boy" (Johnny Sheffield) are abducted, Tarzan, with the aid of his faithful ape, Cheeta, and an army of elephants, finally routs his enemies and is able to return his family to their jungle Paradise.

PORSETRY difficulties are eminent. Owing to rubber and elastic shortages in supply, corset manufacturers have notified greatly reduced and strict rationing of supplies. Lloyds Ltd., of Marton, strongly advise their customers to secure their needs from present stocks where possible, as future supplies will be more costly and strictly limited. Lloyds, in addition skilled fitting service, are at present carrying large stocks of Berlei products at minimum Berlei permitted prices.
