A notice regarding the need for providing returns of stocks of tyres and tubes was published in December last and it was obvious frpm replies received by the Secret?*ry of Supply that many people did not understand that Ine notice appliea to all private individuals, firms ana corporations possessing tyres and tubes in excess of the normal lyre complement of their vehicle. Because of the shortage of raw rubber. following upon the loss of Malaya rind Java it is becoming increasingly difficult to secure additional supplies of tyres from overseas, and a national sLwk-taking is therefore essential with a view to estimating what steps must, be taken in order that essential transport may he kept on the roads. Wholesalers and resellers who have a.reaoy made a March return of stocks are not required to make an additional return for that month. Notice is called to the regulations governing tyres and tubes wherein it is slated that tyres and tubes must not be disposed of without the prior con-j ent of the Secretary of Supply. This also applies to old and useless tyres which must not be sold or destroyed unless the necessary permission has been secured. Heavy penalties are provided for non-compliance with regulations.
