THIRD “LOTTERY” IN U.S.A. Washington, March 18. Mr. Stimson drew the first number in the new draft lottery, which is the third taken in the United States during the present emergency. The reservoir of men now being tapped numbers nine million, including recent registrants between the ages of 20 and 21 and 35 and 44. The previous registrations involved men from 21 to 35. General Hershey, Director of Selective Service, intimated that many thousands of the men in the latest registration. especially those of the higher age groups, may be drafted for war work in shipyards and factories. The draft will call up 1.650,000 men aged 20 to 21 and 7.350,000 older men. Seventeen million men were registered in the two previous lotteries, and those men are now either in service or have been deferred, or are not yet classified. Officials declared that it would be possible to create an army of 8,000,000 from the men between the ages ol 20 and 44.
President Roosevelt has appointed Anril 27 as the registration date for all men aged 45 to 64, inclusive.
