BISHOP’S PROTEST
CONFISCATION OF CHURCH PROPERTY IN GERMANY Stockholm, March 9. A pastoral letter from the Bishop of Berlin, Dr. Preysing, was read in all the Catholic churches in Berlin on March 8, protesting against the confiscation of the Church Youth Hostel in the suburb of Grunau under a decree providing for the confiscation of the property of persons hostile to the State. Dr. Preysing declared that nobody connected with the Church in Grunau had ever been found guilty of aehostile act. “The war demands discipline and reserve from all Germans,” he said. “The party and the enemies of the Church are using this as a cover under which they think they can deal the Church one blow after another.” The Berlin news agency circulates a report of a speech by the Nazi Chief of State in Norway, Major Quisling, dealing with the resignation of the Norwegian bishops, and asserting that long before the war they sided with the Bolsheviks. The Dean of Trondheim, he said, had collected money for the Spanish Marxists. and had been twice condemned after the occupation for misusing his office. Therefore his dismissal would have followed, apart from recent events.
