FOOD FOR GREECE
CARGO FOR SWEDISH VESSEL Rugby, March 8. ' The Swedish ship Hallaren has been chartered to take food to Greece and was due to leave Gothenburg to-day. having been granted the necessary safe conduct. Her sailing may be delayed if Gothenburg is still iceFbund. It is intended that the Hallaren should go to Lihson to load 5000 tons of wheat owned by the Swiss Government, and also other foodstuffs. It is understood that the greater part of Ihe e.xpcnses of the shipment are bein : borne by the Greek Government. This news follows the announcement that the United States is sending 2300 tons of flour which have been purchased by an association of Greeks in the United Stales. Permission for these shipments does not imply intention by the Allies to re'nx the blockade policy against the .Axis Powers, who are responsible lor feeding the occupied countries. It _is| notorious, however, that conditions in; Greece are far worse than elsewhere. Other countries—for instance, Belgium, Norway and Franco--may be seriously undernourished because of German depredations, but. the people there are not dropping dead in the streets at the rate of sveral hundred a day as in Athens and Piraeus. Moreover, Greece, unlike the other occupied countries, has no large industry working for the enemy.— 8.0.W.
