King, commander of the United States Atlantic Fleet, has been appointed com-mander-in-chief of the combined United States Fleets. In his new position he will be responsible direct io President Roosevelt and Colonel F. Knox. Secretary of the Navy. Following President Roosevelt’s conference with Army and Navy commanders, Colonel Knox emphasised that Rear-Admiral Nimitz had succeeded Admiral A. E. Kimmel only to the command of the Pacific Navy, and therefore was not commander-in-chief of the Navy. Rear-Admiral Nimitz is considered to be America’s leading naval strategist. having the most complete knowledge of any American officer of the entire Pacific defence problem, to which Singapore is the key.
