NATIONAL RESERVE

RECRUITING PARADE TO-NIGHT ALARM SYSTEM CHECKED. The Eleventh (Wanganui) Company of the National Military Reserve is to parade to-night as part of a recruiting scheme arranged by the W anganui Territorial Association. The company, commanded by Major J. P. Wells, will march through the Avenue, headed by the W anganui Highland Pipe Band. A total of 288 men, who are to be medically examined, and must reach the Class II standard of physical fitness, are required to build the present company into a battalion. They are to be between the ages of 46 and 55 and will be uniformed, armed and equipped immediately. The National Reserve is now under orders to remain within call of headquarters. There is lo be no relaxation of parades as was intended during the holidays. Last night a specially arranged alarm system was checked, transport provided and details so marshalled that the nwn can be turned out ready for action within an hour. Every man is lo have his kit packed, to have rations capable for seeing him over the first 24 hours’ service in the event of an emergency. It is intended also to give advice later as to a type of tinned ration which can be carried for use al any time should the need arise.

Non-commissioned officers are to be drafted into teams to begin training of recruits for the new battalion, which are now coming. A special course of instruction is being arranged. t
