WESTMERE WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
BIRTHDAY PARTY. The Westmere Women's Institute held its eleventh birthday party in the Westmere Hall on Tuesday last. Mrs. Cooper presided over a large attendance, including representatives from Mosston, Aramoho, Kaitoke and Westbourne Institutes and the Townswomen's Guild, all of whom conveyed birthday greetings. Apologies were received from other district institutes who were unable to be present mainly owing to petrol restrictions. This meeting opened with the New Zealand National Anthem, with a minute's silent prayer, after -which the aspirations were read. This meeting was the first of the meetings for the nursing services, and parcels for the 11 Wanganui and district nurses were on view. Also on view were 24 soldiers' parcels an ready for dispatch to Westmere boys overseas. A short reading on "London Hospitals in War Time" was read byMrs. Preston. Three short Golden Thread items followed, those taking part being Miss E. Smith (pianoforte solo), Miss Missen (violin solo), and Mrs. Preston (vocal). An amusing sketch was given byMrs. Harvey Gilberd and Miss E. Warnock. Community singing was led by Mrs. Wilson and the Westmere Vocal Trio. Competition for bowl of flowers resulted as follows:—Mrs. Cameron 1, Mrs. M. K. Laird 2, Mrs. Flynn 3. Hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Barnes, Waters. Robinson, H. Taylor, Frost, Misses Dawes and Norrie.
