FOR SERVICE OVERSEAS

MARTON V.A.D.'S ENTERTAINED The Druids' Hall. Marlon. was drowned on Saturday night by an enthusiastic assemblage of members of the different war organisations and friends to do honour to Misses J. Cherry and E. Watts (St. John Ambulance) and Miss J. Murray (Red Cross) who have been selected for service overseas. The music for the dances was supplied by Mr. Law ton Barry's Orchestra, and Mr. Wells and Mr. Don Bartlett, assisted with extras. An excellent supper was provided bf the ladies of St. John Ambulance, Red Cross, W.W.S.A. and Marton Patriotic Society. A competition, a set of lingerie, was won by’ Mrs. J. R. L. Stanford and a Monte Carlo was won by Miss Smith and partner. Prior to the presentations by the Mayor (Mr. F. Purnell), 24 members of the three war organisations formed a guard of honour, with splints as an archway and the three guests marched under the archway to the platform, the guard of honour singing "The Maori Farewell."

The Mayor apologised for the absence ot the Lady District Officer. Mrs. W. Raine, and stated that their guests had volunteered and been accepted for service with the Tuis. The night's gathering had been organised by” the ladies of the war organisations. Splendid work had been done in Marton in the past and he was certain that that would continue in the future. Marton had been fortunate tn having two ladv representatives who had already left these shores, and now they had three selected out of the 200 who were now required. The women were doing magnificent work in all departments of the war services. He wished them every success in their new venture. Mi Purnell then presented to each V.A.D a handbag, cheque and an active service wallet from the three comnined organisations, a pair of brown kid gloves from St. John Ambulance and a writing case and pac from the Marton Patriotic Society. The guests retired under the archway, the ladies of the guard singing "There'll Always he an England."
