Parkinson, who is to command the new Army Tank Brigade, arrived back in Wellington on Friday from the Middle East. Brigadier Parkinson left with the First Echelon and served in the Greek campaign. Mr. C. A. Jeffery, chief private secretary to the Prime Minister, left Wellington tor Rotorua by the Mam Trunk express on Friday afternoon. Mr. Jeffery was seriously injured several montns ago in a motor-<ar accident in Egypt. Mr. P. H. W. C Barne} ”> Ogier, formerly a well-known cricketer in Wellington, died on Thursda} at the age of 8d years. Mr. Ogier, who was a native of the Channel islands, came out to New Zealand in his youth, and lived lor some years in Christchurch, later going to Wellington. Mr. Ogier leaves a widow. The death occurred on Thursday at Thames of a most widely-known identity, Mr. James Twohill, whose popularity extended from the North Cape to the Bluff, and whose family name is synonymous with Thames itself. But more synonymous still with the name of Twohill is the Hotel Brian Boru, as the Twohill family have had their name painted on its portals lor the past 70 years. After a serious illness, the death occurred ou Friday ol Mr. T. B. Garrick. a prominent sheep-farmer ol Total a Valley, A bachelor, Mr. Garrick was elected to the Levels County Council in 1904 and had been chairman since 1924. He was cle ’ci to the Timaru Harbour Board in 11.19 and was chairman irom 1933 to 1937. He was a member of No. 15 District Highways Council since its inception and a director of the Canterbury Farmers’ Co-operative Association, Limited, for a great many years.

Messrs. V. C. Dillon and H. Daly, who have resigned their positions as drivers in the service of the Wanganui Free Ambulance, were tendered a farewell at the ambulance station by members of the auxiliary staff on Saturday night. On behalf of members of the honorary staff, presentations of frameless mirrors were made lo the guests by Mr. D. E. Gullery. transport officer. Trioutes were paid to the outstanding public service men had rendered in Wanganui to the sick and injured during the past seven and live years, respectively.

The death occurred at Havelock North oir Friday morning of John Alexander McLean, a well-known resident of Havelock North. Born in Scotland in 1848, Mr. McLean, in company with his wife, <ame to New ZeaiaiKi m 1883, and for some years lived

in Napier. They then moved lo the Auikland district, and in 1913 returned to Hawkes Bay. taking up residence in Havelock North. Mr. McLean took an active part in public li. r e. His wife and one daughter, Beatrice, predeceased him in 1936, and there are left one son, Mr. W. McLean. Great Barrier Island, and throe daughters. Misses Margaret, Mary and Alice McLean, all of Haveiock North. There is also one sister, Mrs. Maclachlan. Scotland.
