GIRLS MARCHING DISPLAY WA.NG.ANI I DEMONSTRATION A crowd estimated al 4i<»>. assembled at Cooks Gardens yesterday afternoon, watched the best demonstration nt girls’ marching yet seen in Wanganui. More than 150 girls took part in colourful and specta<iilar exhibitions. the programme concludin’: with a massed display in which 12 teams took part The gathering was arranged by the Wanganui Marching Association and was favoured with perfect weather. Tne high standard of marching seen yesterday indicated that the teams have devoted much time and practice to their work. Officials conducting the demonstration said they were particularly gratified with the displays given by the girls. Three bands, the Wanganui Garrison Band. Wanganui Highland Pipe Band, and the Queen Alexandra s Mounted Rifles Band, were in attendance. The programme was well conducted. each item following without delay Several of the teams gave individual demonstrations, their displays being varied and interesting.
The programme opened with a parade in which all team*. carrying] their respective banners and led by , the Wanganui Highland P»p* Band.■ marched round the oval, the girls, in i their bright uniforms, winning the applause of the crowd. The first individual demonstration was given by the Technical College | Old Girls, the team which won the! r.ii tr.tr. hami ■ nshi| ®t Hswer® recently This i-omnination. led by Miss I J. McFarland, was awarded 1523! points at Haw era and was highly! praised for its work. Other individual displays were given ye>terday by McGmer’s Ltd. <Mc-| Gruers Victory March*. Glencoe ant Red Cross also took part. The highlight of the programme was the human Catherine wheel display in, which 12 teams and 156 girls took part. ■ under te supervision of Drum-Major D A.
