GONVILLE CROQUET SEASON

THE OFFICIAL OPENING representatives of other CLUBS PRESENT The president of the Wanganui Croquet Association. Mrs. Len Bassett, and representatives of sister clubs, attended the opening day of the 194142 season of the Gonville Croouet Club on Saturday afternoon. They were welcomed by the president of the club. Mrs. F. H. Uttley. who took the opportunity of welcoming the newly-anpointed patron of the club. Mr. F. Harrison. Mention was made of members who had passed on and, in referring to the death of the former patron the late Mr. J. Morrison, the president, in paying a tribute to his work for the club, said he had been instrumental in securing the ground for the Gonville Croquet Club. Mrs. Uttley thanked Mrs. Bergin, who made and gave a 71b. fruit cake to the club for competition, and also thanked Mrs. E. Stewart for her floral work. Thanks were expressed to the hostesses who had held the card parties during the winter months. Mrs. Len Bassett officially opened the season by putting the first ball through the hoop. She congratulated the club on the improvements to the pavilion by the addition of a wide verandah and also congratulated the club on having Mr. Harrison as patron and on the reduction of the bisques. Mrs. Bassett, on behalf of the association. extended good wishes for the season. Mr. Harrison thanked the club for electing him to the position of patron and paid a warm tribute to the late Mr. J. Morrison for his great interest in the club especially during its early years, and said he would be greatly missed. Speaking of croquet in Wanganui he referred to the tremendous work done by Mrs. A. Crawford and Mrs. Bassett Smith and. in welcom-l ing Mrs. Len Bassett and Mr. Shields (association secretary), said they would worthily uphold the work done by their predecessors. Sprays were presented to Mrs. Bassett and Mrs. Uttley. a buttonhole to Mr. Harrison.

Competition games of croquet were played during the afternoon and tea was served in the pavilion, the tables being decorated with wallflowers and may blossom. The tea hostesses were Miss Gerrie and Mesdames Bergen and Johnston. Those in charge of competitions were: Skittles, Mesdames Wallace, McLean Hampton and Cheeseman: crazy hoops, Mesdames Revell. McCaffrey, Beaven and Dawson: basin-in-the-hole, Mesdames Wood, Body. Laing and Mr. Cheeseman. Mesdames Wallace and G. Bergen judged the sponge competition, their awards being as follows: Butter sponge. Mrs. Drake; butterless sponge, Mrs. Torlesse. A stall was in charge of Mesdames Stewart and Parker.

Others present included Mrs. J. McDougal. Miss M. Hamilton. Mesdames Taylor, Perry, Bradshaw. Easton. J. Brass. Moore, Rountree (Christchurch). Simmons, Fisher. Barlow. Ogier, Dixon. Ogg, Murphy, N. Lynch F. Warnock, Gay. Orchard. Mew. Owles. Drake. Torlesse, Misses J. Morrison and Revell.
