COLTS BY CORONACH
DERBY WINNER’S FIRST N.Z. PROGENY The fact that three colts by the 1926 Derby winner Coronach, the only Derby winner to come to New Zealand, have made their appearance at Mr. J. G. Alexander's Cranleigh Stud, Maxwell, makes interesting reading, especially as the Hurry On sire’s arrival in the Dominion last year was so late in the season that he had only limited opporunities. Several other mares are in foal to him but are holding longer than usual. The best colt of the lot, voted by those who have seen him the living image of his sire, is a dark chestnut out of Mr. T. A. Duncan’s brilliant mare Oratory, daughter of Gainscourt and Demosthenes Equitas mare Oratress, winner of the 1920 New Zealand Cup.
Another of the colts is a brown in colour, and his dam is the KilbroneySnowstell mare Snowshoe, dam of Renascor and Kippit Lee, and a fullsister of Arctic King’s dam, Snowland. The third is a bay from Varimonfi, by Limond from Variable, by Pombal from Motley, and therefore a descendant of Mr. G. M. Currie’s famous stud matron Eulogy.
An arrival at Cranleigh Stud just over a week ago was the English-bred mare Canvas, by Sir Cosmo from the Captain Cuttie mare Canna. Canvas was served by the Truculent horse Flag of Truce to New Zealand time, and she is well in foal. As she is to be mated with Coronach, this fact will be of ini erest to students of breeding, as her dam was a grand-daughter of Hurry On.
