Basketball and Tennis Visitors. Girls from the New Plymouth High School comprising the A and B basketball teams and senior tennis team will arrive in Wanganui to-day and will be the guests of the Wanganui Girls' College. The tennis match is timed for 9.30 a.m. on Saturday and the basketball games at 1 p.m. The visitors will leave by express at 3.20 p.m. on their return to New Plymouth. Last Saturday the Hawera Technical High School basketball teams paid a visit to Wanganui to play against the Girls’ College teams. College A team won by 22 to 12 and College B won 18-11.
Turangaarere Women's Institute Mrs. Bartell presided at the September meeting of the Turangaarere Women's Institute and welcomed two visitors. Business reports were read. Mrs. Millan and Miss Ra.ukawa agreed to write the report of the half-yearly meeting to be held at Rangataua. Mrs. Wood and Mrs. Shaw were appointed as reporting and voting delegates respectively. Members agreed to do patriotic knitting, also to bring parcels to the next meeting for the appeal for lepers. The Plunket nurse’s car donations will also be sent in to the October meeting. An invitation was received from the Rangataua W.I. to attend the birthday gathering next month. Books from the Turangaarere W.I. by the Mangatepopo, Utiku and Rangataua Institutes. Mrs. Bartell read a letter from a former member, Mrs. Canton, now of Auckland, who also sent a box of spring flowers for the meeting. Mrs. Vaile, from the Kaikohe W.1., gave details of the programme they arranged for the year. Competition results were;— Sponge cake, Miss D. Bartell 1, Mrs. Sinclair 2; sand saucer of flowers, Mrs. Sinclair 1, Mrs. Tall 2; premier flower, Mrs. Millan. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses. Competitions for next month will be spring bulbs arranged in a vase, and something made from one yard of print. Roll call, "A Garden Query.”
Upper Waitotara Women’s Institute. The meeting of the Upper Waitotara Women's Institute was held on September 3. There was an attendance of 11 members. The meeting was opened with the reciting of the aspiration. Two parcels were made up for two local soldiers serving overseas and it was decided to contribute some parcels for the Christmas despatch. The birthday dance, which was held for patriotic mnds, proved a great success. Winners of tne competitions were as follows: Best-knitted balaclave, Mrs. Joynt 1, Mrs. Boswell 2, Miss Chesswas 3; best vase oi flowers, Miss Chesswas 1, Mrs. C. Chesswas 2, Mrs. Joynt 3. Competitions for next month will be: Best pair girl's bloomers, best knitted pair mittens, best vase of flowers. There will be a '.'bring-and-buy” stall next month and members are also requested to bring a woollen article suitable for refugees. The meeting was closed with the singing of the National Anthem.
