DEALING WITH DEFAULTERS
N.Z. R.S.A. ATTITUDE REPRESENTATIONS TO HIE A< TING-PRIME MINISTER. (Press Assn.) Wellington, Aug. 13. A number of representations in respect to the Government’s policy regarding military defaulters have been made to the Government by the Dominion Executive Committee of the Returned Soldiers’ Association. It was reported to a meeting of committee that an assurance was sought that the regulations to implement the proposals outlined by the acting-Prime Minister, Hon. W. Nash, last Friday, contain provisions to ensure that defaulters, beside being detained in camps arc (1) Given useful work without pay. (2.) Detained for the duration of the war. (3) Deprived of cSvil rights during detention and for 10 years following the conclusion of the war. It was considered that some provision should be made for the dependants of those concerned. The Government was also urged to expedite- the gazetting of the regulations in order that appropriate action may be taken without further delay. The committee received advice from Mr. Nash that lhe Government does not propose to enforce contributions to the compulsory war loan from any members of the overseas forces, irrespective of whether, or not. appeals had been lodged. “In some cases.” the Minister's letter stated, “default notices may have been issued to non-subscribers who are serving overseas, but when the true position is ascertained no further action will be taken,”
