“THE GROUND CREWS"

FIRST THOUGHT OF SERGEANTPILOT J. A. WARD, V.C. HONOURED BY HIS SQUADRON (Recd. 11.50 p.m.) London, Aug. 12. The sergeants’ mess of the 75th. New Zealand Bomber Squadron entertained Sergeant J. A. Ward, V.C. (Wanganui) at a smoke concert. The New Zealand High Commissioner. Mr. W. Jordan, said: “Sergeant Ward has brought honour on himself, on his squadron and on the Dominion. We are proud of him for his courage, quickness of thought and action.’’ Responding to a chorus: “We want Jimmy Ward,” the new V.C. paid tribute Io the ground crews. “Those chaps,” he said, “do as much as we even do. but there are no Victoria Crosses for them.” Mr. Jordan also congratulated Gunner Box, also of New Zealand (Auckland), who was in the same plane as Sergeant-Pilot Ward and was awarded the D.F.M.
