CLEARING SLUMS

FREEMAN’S BAY AREA AUCKLAND

Auckland, Aug. 13. A report on methods of dealing with slum conditions in Freeman’s Bay and the development of the area for industrial purposes is being prepared by the city engineer, Mr. J. Tyler. Referring to the recent statement by the Minister of Housing, Hon. H. T. Armstrong, that the Government was considering legislation for slum clearance, the Mayor, Mr. J. A. C. Allum, said that the last City Council had set up a special committee in April under the chairmanship of Dr. R. G. Mcllroy to report on a draft bill which Dr. Mcllroy had prepared for submission to the Government. Because of the municipal elections the committee had not finished its work. The proposals in the draft bill were on the same lines as those indicated by the Minister. In the meantime the city engineer wBs d-awing up a report on the Freeman’s Bay problem, and the matter would be considered later.
