SUBSIDY ON WAGES
WAITOTARA COUNTY’S POSITION RELIEF WORKERS REQUIRED , FOR OTHER WORK. "There is something rotten aboutthe administration of this subsidy I scheme when men are kept on where there arc already good roads and cannot be kept on back country roads whose maintenance is essential to primary production," said Cr. L. T. Jones, at the monthly meeting of the Waitotara County Council yesterday. The council had received notice from the Social Security Department of the termination of the Scheme 13 subsidy on the wages of two surfacemen in the Tokomaru Riding. The chairman, Mr. W. Morrison, said he understood that the two men concerned were wanted for other work and would be replaced by two other men. Cr. R. Farley: It would be unwise to assume that we will get two other men in their place. Once those two men go, that will be the end of it, and •we should take a strong stand. We had a hard job to get two men to go out there in the first place. The chairman suggested it would be advisable to defer decision until the engineer-clerk (Mr. T. R. Dix) returned. Other councillors concurred, and referred the question to the chairman in the meantime.
