; MR. I. J. ROTHSCHILD DEAD (Press Assn.) Wellington, Aug. 11. Mr. Isadore J. Rothschild, of Weillington, died to-day in his 93rd year. |He was a well-known jeweller. Mr. Rothschild was one of the oldest Freemasons in the Dominion, and a member for a great many years of the Chamber of Commerce and of the Commercial Travellers’ Club, a life member of the Midland Club, of Christchurch, and a member of the Wellington Racing Club. Mr. Rothschild was born at Bristoi on March 10, 1949, and received his education at Dr. Stone’s Academy. Stoke Croft, Somersetshire. He began his business life immediately on leaving school, being apprenticed to the jewellery manufacturing trade in
Birmingham, and subsequently he was a traveller. News of the discovery of gold in New Zealand led him to sail in 1867 for Australia, thence to Hokitika, blit the venture was not successful and he returned to England. He came out to New Zealand again in IS7S and founded a jewellery business in Dunedin, but it did not flourish in those days of financial stringency. Then he set up in business in Sydney, but following a period of ill-health came to NewZealand for the third time, entering the business of Mandel and. Harris, Wellington. During the Great War he I went to England to purchase stock with a view to setting up business in Wellington. In 1918 his son, Mr. Leo C. Rothschild, entered into partnership with him and the business has been carried on ever since.
