TERM IN BORSTAL EXTENDED
EXTRA YEAR IMPOSED TWO BOYS WHO BREAK FROM CUSTODY. (Press Assn.) Dunedin, Aug. 9. Two boys, 17 and 15 years of age, who broke away from a police escort on the Dunedin railway station while being taken to Borstal at Invercargill, appeared in the children’s court this morning when, after hearing the story of their escapes the magistrate (Mr. Bartholomew) extended their term in Borstal by one year. The police said the boys were incorrigible. The younger was originally convicted at Thames on 19 charges and the elder at Wellington for unlawful conversion of a car, both being committed to Borstal for two years. They escaped from a railway carriage and eluded the constable chasing them. Forcing their way into several premises in the city, they finally commandeered a big truck and after stealing petrol, headed for South Otago, abandoning the vehicle at Clinton. Here they separated but after further minor burglaries they joined forces again at Balclutha, where the younger was arrested. The elder boy was found hiding under a hedge at Waitepeka.
