MEAT RESTRICTIONS
POSITION THIS YEAR FARMERS’ UNION VIEW “Buying will continue by the companies as at present, and arrangements will be made by the Government to take over the meat at a specified time after killing,” stated the Dominion secretary of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, Mr. A. P. O’Shea, Wellington, re a circular letter received at the monthly meeting of the Wanganui Provincial Executive yesterday. Mr. O'Shea added that as far as he could gather this would be the position in regard to meat this year. “There should be no material change in the purchase prices this season unless these are due to factors other than the price for the meat, such as a fall in the value of offals, etc.,” the circular stated. “No differentiation will be made this season as between the various classes of meat, though it is probable that the whole position will be subject to considerable change before next season." The president, Mr. T. Currie (Brunswick) commented that the circular was not absolutely correct. Old ewes weighing more than 731bs. were worth skin value and nothing else. Mr. W. Morrison (Maxwell) . said freezing companies were not paid till the meat was placed on board overseas ships. He did not know if they had received any payment lately, but they could not go on indefinitely without payment. The Government had now agreed, however, to pay for the meat while "it was in storage, and much of the concern existing among farmers on this point had been removed. . Mr. H. E. Frederick (Waimarino) said the Government should be asked to make use of good over-weight meat as much as possible. Mr. C. Smith said that every old tat ewe put into consumption would interfere with other meat. If old ewes were going to be put on the market, provision would have to be made for the difficulties of retail butchers.
