APPEALS AGAINST SERVICE
FARMERS CO-OPERATE WITH MANPOWER COMMITTEE REPORTS ON APPLICANTS Advice that the Director of National Service, Hon. R. Semple, approved of a scheme of co-operation between Manpower Committees and Primary Production Councils was received at a meeting of the Wellington Central Provincial Executive of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union in Marton yesterday. Following reports from members that Manpower Committees had asked responsible farmers for confidential reports on appellants against military service, as many boards were not sure if cases made by appellants, assisted by lawyers, were proper presentations of the facts, the secretary, Mr. K. W. Little, read a circular received from the National Council of Primary Production. It stated that several district councils had resolved to seek authority to enable them to co-operate with Manpower Committees by reporting to them on individual cases of farmers and farm workers called up in the ballots, whether appeals had been lodged or not, and it had been ascertained that the Director of National Service approved such a scheme. The circular stated that it had been decided to recommend to branch councils and all primary producers’ sub-committees that, fo; - each district, at least two representatives be appointed to give collaborative evidence, where deemed necessary, and on request, in all appeals for farmers and farm workers for postponement of Territorial training, or exemption from overseas service.
