HITHER AND THITHER

S.P.C.A. Appeal. At the monthly meeting of the S.P.C.A. pleasure was expressed by the president (Mrs. A. McPhail) and the honorary secretary (Mr. A. G. Cross) at the growing enthusiasm being shown by the public in the work of the society, seven new members being added to the roll at the meeting. This society is doing a great service in righting the wrongs of dumb animals. The humane treatment given to suffering animals by Mr. Dyer, the local inspector, was appreciatively discussed by the society. It is hoped that the war appeals won’t crowd out this urgent claim of animal suffering, and that enough funds will come in to cope with all the calls put upon the society. This largely depends on the public, whose sympathy is valuable and whose material assistance could be invaluable. Please help to-day’s appeal for suffering animals. Excellent Effort by V.A. Workers. A shop day and jumble stall organised by the Red Cross voluntary aid workers to assist the Air Force Week appeal, held last Friday has resulted in the handsome sum of £lOO being handed to the president of the Air Force Relations Committee. . The takings at the shop and jumble stall were about £65, and the fun fair held in the evening realised £35. The expenses were very small and after these were paid, the proceeds as above were handed in for the A.F.R. appeal. The effort put forth by the workers was excellent, and included the V.A.W’s. of Wanganui, Kaitoke, Westmere, St. John’s Hill, Victoria League and Women’s Club, all of whom worked hard in the interests of the appeal. The competitions were won as follows:—Eggs, Mrs. P. H. Hartland; dinner, Mr. Bisson; bag. Pauline Kettle; onions, Arundel; chocolates. Kiss, Owhanga.
